BYZANTINE EMPIRE
Lot of nine 23k gold repoussé ornamental plates, mismatched and of various shapes, pierced at the edges for mounting, comprising :
- A circular one depicting Christ enthroned, blessing with his left hand and holding the celestial globe with his right, haloed by a cross pattée, bordered by two friezes decorated with volutes. D.: 8.2 cm. Weight: 9.6 g.
- A circular figure of a cross slightly patté and pommelée within a quatrefoil, bordered by a wave frieze. D.: 8.2 cm. Weight: 9.6 g.
- One rectangular Crucifixion, Christ's head in profile turned to his right, held by four nails, and surrounded by two bearded men (Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus?), at the corners four crosses, two four-lobed at the top, two pattées at the bottom. H.: 13 - L. 9 cm. Weight: 21.7 g.
- One in the form of a richly harnessed galloping horse. L.: 13 cm. Weight: 12.0 g.
- Two rectangles depicting a man on horseback (Christ?) in a medallion, one depicting him beside a shrub on a radiant background, the other depicting him with a man on foot giving him a palm leaf (Palm Sunday?) on a plain background. H.: 10 - L. 9 cm. Total weight: 33.9 g.
- Three with hunting decor, including two bands and one slightly curved trapezoid, possibly quiver ornaments; the latter depicting a man on horseback with his two dogs in foliate foliage, the other two with zoomorphic foliage. L.: 14.2 - 19.3 - 21 cm. Total weight: 39.0 g. Byzantine period and various.
ATTACHED is a scientific report from CIRAM on the analysis of the Crucifixion plate, concluding that the gold content was around 24k and that silver, copper and platinum were present, corresponding to ancient and traditional metallurgy, and consistent with the Byzantine period claimed for these plates.
