Historical

“All the splendor made of immensity and abundance of the Russian land”

Strongly influenced by the masters of the Barbizon school, Iosif Krachkovsky distinguished himself brilliantly in the landscape genre, offering a unique interpretation of nature imbued with poetry. The essence of his compositions lies mainly in the ability to immerse the viewer in the heart of the scenes he represents, a quality resulting

notably his travels which largely nourished his work. One of the decisive journeys in his career, following his training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Saint Petersburg, took him to the French capital. Already appreciated by the imperial family, in particular Alexander III and Nicholas II, Krachkovsky seized the opportunity of Parisian artistic emulation to increase his fame. Her

entered the Salon in 1882 with the work “Little Russia; the evening” (n°1473) marks the beginning of a series of exhibitions, including that of 1883 presenting our painting. It was in 1908 that the Parisian public fully discovered the extent of his talents through the exhibition at the Georges Petit gallery entitled “Landscapes of Crimea”.

In “La Presse” of June 3, 1908, Willy Roger said of Krachkovsky: “There are, in fact, in the talent of Mr. Kratchcovsky very French qualities (...) like a poetic languor where we find all the Russian soul. You have to go and see these vigorously brushed landscapes where the air vibrates around things or the trees are drawn without a glitch and without a sleight of hand where the terrain

flee towards horizons whose style is reminiscent of Claude Lorrain or Corot. They reveal to us all the heavy beauty, all the splendor made of immensity and abundance of the Russian land with luxuriant vegetation, with varied aspects but always imbued with melancholy and a slightly wild grandeur.
