Lord Herbert Stern, first Baron Michelham (1851-1919), son of a German banker established in London and a Portuguese baroness, himself
director of the Stern Brothers bank, distinguished himself by his philanthropic actions during the Great War and by his artistic patronage, characterized
by numerous donations made to the National Gallery in London. Raised to the distinction of Baron Michelham in February 1906 by King Edward VII, he is
also rewarded for his loyal service by being made a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order on 4 April 1912.
On February 13, 1906, during the first session of Parliament of the reign of Edward VII (1901-1910), Lord Herbert Michelham was introduced into the chamber
of the Lords by Lord Belper and Lord Shelborne. Dressed in his ceremonial habit, he is enthroned as a baron by the new monarch
British, Edward VII, with four other lords. It is the witnesses and memories of this nomination that we present here.
